Freeze-Fracture Studies of Various Membrane Components Isolated from Tetrahymena pyriformis Cells
Department of Biochemistry, Gifu University School of Medicine Tsukasamachi-40, Gifu, Japan
Various subcellular membrane fractions are isolated from a ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena pyriformis WH-14 and examined by freeze-frac-ture electron microscopy. The size and distribution density of membrane-intercalated partides are different between the types of the membrane. The particles of the alveolar membranes (AM) are larger (115±25 Å) than those of the plasma membrane (70±20 Å). The A faces of the distal portion of the ciliary membrane reveal fewer particles as compared to those of the proximal portion.
