Three-dimensional models of mitochondria of Chlamydomonas reinhardi Dangeard were constructed based on serial sections of the cells at intermediate stages of the growth phase of tbe cell cycle. Small mitochondria as well as giant forms appearing in tbe cells at an intermediate stage were found to hare much more complex structures than one would Imagine from their profiles in random cell sections; e.g., elongation, articulation by constrictions, and branching were frequently observed. Estimation of the number of mitochondria per cell supported the notion that giant mitochondria are formed by the fusion of smaller ones.
