Construction of three-dimensional models of mitochondria in dividing cells of Chlamydomonas reinhardi Dangeard from consecutive sections revealed their complex structures and a characteristic mode of separation of larger mitochondria into smaller and simpler forms. The larger mitochondria seemed to be composed of rod-shaped bodies connected with bands or plates which gave dumbbell-shaped profiles on sections. These rods were separated from each other by fracture of the connecting material and subsequently cut into smaller pieces. It was suggested that during tbe cytokinesis total volume of mitochondria per mother cell remains nearly constant, while the number of mitochondria increases significantly. It was also suggested that mitochondria are apportioned in equal volume among daughter protoplasts.
