Intramembrane Particle Distribution in Renal Collecting Tubule Cells in Normal, Dehydrated and Hereditary Diabetes Insipidus Rats with Particular Reference to Orthogonal Arrays of Particles
Department of Anatomy, School of Medicine, Chiba University Chiba, 280 Japan
The uriniferous tubule cells In the kidney of mutant rats bearing diabetes insipidus (DI) were examined mainly using freeze-fracture methods, and com pared with those of normal control and dehydrated rats. Orthogonal arrays (OAs) of square particles were observed in the basolateral plasma membrane of the collecting tubule. OAs of square particles were augmented in the basolateral membrane of the collecting tubule cells of dehydrated rats, whereas they showed a diminution In DI animals as compared with the normal controls. These changes were more conspicuous In the basal plasma membrane than In the lateral one. Further, aggregations of globular intramembrane particles were noted In the lateral membrane of the collecting tubule cells in these de hydrated rats. A quantitative analysis of OA was made and the possible role of OA was discussed.
