The helicity and the packing of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) within bundles have been determined by electron nanodiffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy. Only a weak preference for the armchair helicity was found. More frequently several chiral and non-chiral were seen to co-exist in a single bundle. The electronic structure of bundles of SWNTs was studied using electron energy-loss spectroscopy. It is proposed that the inter-tube bonding in the bundles be of
character.
