Stereomorphic Structure of the Intercellular Bridges between Rat Seminiferous Epithelial Cells
Second Department of Anatomy, Kurutne University School of Medicine Kurume, 830 Japan
Following collagenase treatment, the overall profiles of the intercellular bridges among germ cells thus exposed can be mainly observed with SEM. The intercellular bridges are classified into three groups; long and narrow, short and broad, and intermediate. In the basal portion of the rat seminiferous epithelium, all groups of the bridges are present. They are found either between A-like spermatogonia or between B-like cells. A-like spermatogonia are loosely connected by the narrow bridges to form simple cords. In contrast, B-like spermatogonia are tightly connected by the intermediate bridges to form complicated cords or large polygonal syncytia which may possibly cause B-cells or spermatocytes and migrate towards the adluminat portion. Meanwhile, the broad bridges are found mainly between spermatocytes or spermatids especially in the adluminal portion of the seminiferous epithelium. This type of bridge may be related to synchronization of cell division in a nutrition-poor microenvironment.
